Meli’s Favorite Dish EVER!

Today I’d like to share my very favorite dish with you – Semolina Dumplings a la Kohl (how my Mom makes them).

These dumplings are commonly boilt in water and served as a savory side dish – nevertheless I have always known them fried in the pan with sugar and cinnamon and ideally with fresh strawberries to go with them … and I don’t desire them any other way!

The other day I made them myself for the first time after calling my Mom at eight in the evening for the recipe. All of a sudden I just had to have them and couldn’t get them out  of my mind!

Well, I can’t find my hurridly scribbled note anymore so in case I have forgotten something – Nena, please correct me!

OK, here we go:

Bring 1 liter of milk to boil with some butter and nutmeg.

Then turn off the heat and slowly add 250g of semolina – make sure to keep stirring all the while until semolina is well mixed!

Take pot off the stove and add 1 egg – mix well and leave for 5 minutes.

Then add another egg, mix well and leave for another 5 minutes.

Then makes dumplings with the help of a tablespoon and some water (dip spoon after each one).

Those you can then fry in the pan with some butter and bread crumbs and eat them with brown sugar sprinkled on top.

YUUUUUUUUUUMMY!!!!!!!!!!

Of course Erik had to be be introduced to this delicacy, so after gobbling up a whole heap as desert that same evening, Erik and I had some more for breakfast the next day AND the day after!

Despite his doubting look he liked his dumpling very much! Mama would have been horrified if he hadn’t :P

Herb Garden

We may have mentioned before that one of Meli’s very favorite outings are trips to the nursery. Now that most of the house projects have been completed we have started planning the garden. For Meli’s taste so far this involves  way too much planning and far too few trips to the nursery.

Anyway, we will soon go into the whole garden planning thing in another post. For now we would like to report on how Meli got Glenn to go to the nursery with her last weekend. Once again it was the cunning strategy that keeps working time and time again: Oh, PLEASE, Sweetypie … let’s just go and have a LOOK / check what they have / check prices / or – in this case – just get some herbs for the windowsill in the kitchen. It will look so pretty and just THINK how nice it will be to cook with our own herbs!

And here’s the result:

What you see in the right hand corner are tomato plant babies from experienced tomato farmer Angie.

Pretty, isn’t it? And yummy too! There’s coriander, basil, parsley, oreganum, spearmint and chives.

Don’t hesitate to contact Meli if you need tips on how to get your hubby to the nursery! :)

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Cooking With Meli – Today: Peach Polenta

This is my favorite breakfast at the moment. If any of you are into warm breakfasts give it a try!

Cook polenta with some butter and honey (I recommend 3 minute polenta!)

Steam one sliced peach (or nectarine) per person in peach juice together with some raisins and cinnamon.

Roast some pecan nuts in a pan.

Done! Sooo yummy – especially to warm you up in Winter. Shame that here peach season is in Summer.

Enjoy!
